Description
The statue of the Count of Egmont and the Count of Hornes is part of a fountain located in the Place du Petit Sablon in Brussels, Belgium. It was the work of Belgian sculptor Charles-Auguste Fraikin (1817-1893).
Lamoral, Count of Egmont, Prince of Gavere (1522 - 1568) was a general and statesman in the Spanish Netherlands just before the start of the Eighty Years' War, whose execution helped spark the national uprising that eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands.
Philip de Montmorency (1524 - 1568), or Count of Horn, a stadtholder of Gelderland, admiral of Flanders and knight of the Golden Fleece, was a victim of the Inquisition in the Spanish Netherlands.
They were both seized, tried and condemned as traitors, and were executed in front of the town hall in Brussels.
